For the world of nudism there exist two terms: "Nudism" and "Naturism". Many discussions have been held debating whether any practical differences between the two terms exists. Some people say that naturists usually emphasize nature. By being naked they join nature. They take care of it, and try to live a natural life by eating natural food, and abstaining from smoking, etc. Because nudists also generally love nature we can neglect the differences, if there exist any. Since in Europe the term Naturism is common, we shall use the word "naturism" from now on.
Here in Israel there is much misunderstanding about nudity in general and social nudity (nudism) in particular, thus we feel the need to explain it here.
From our sources:
So God created Mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created
him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them... ... (Gen.
1:27-28)
And God saw every that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
(Gen. 1:31)
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they felt no shame.(Gen. 2:25)
We learn from these verses that mankind in origin was naked, and only
after it corrupted its way, people began to be ashamed and to cover
their body. Later nudity became "immoral" or connected with "sexual
immodesty". How is that possible? The Lord said that his creation was
very good. How could He bless the man and his woman if they, both nude,
were immoral and immodest? Is there any connection between morality and
sexual modesty and clothes? We reject this notion, and as morality and
sexual modesty cannot be identified with clothing, so amorality and
sexual shamelessness can not be identified with the absence of clothing.
A slogan very to the point is:
As children we were happy and we sang loudly while being totally nude in
the bathroom. What was the secret of that happiness, if it is other
than the fact that we were shamelessly naked? The same feeling of
happiness and liberation people feel when they are naked alone can be
enjoyed when they are with others, without shame, without the curiosity
to know what lies behind a small piece of textile.
The sense of shame
toward nudity is a result of an education which has taught us that the
human body is a thing to be ashamed of, and therefore must be covered
for the sake others.
Nudism encourages openness, acceptance of your body. There is no need
to be ashamed of it.
Practiced naturists are more self-confident, and
more able to accept others. They are broad minded. Real naturists are
generally very kind and polite people, and patient with others.
